Australian
slang
Australia
has its own vocabulary and uses some expressions that are very specific
to the country and its culture
G'day:
Good day, means "Hello"
No
worries: No problem, that's OK. Used by many people in almost
every sentence.
Mate: Guy - as in "No Worries Mate", whether you
know the person or not and whether the person is a male or a female,
by the way. "G'day mate" also works.
Barbie: barbecue, where the meat is generally served with
lots of coleslaw, potato salad and beer. Kind of a national institution,
and barbecue installations can be found in most of the picnic areas,
parks, camping places and rest areas...
Esky: insulated box. Essential accessory to carry the
beers for the barbie. Tip: bags of ice can be found in many shops, including
petrol stations.
Bastard: expression which can mean many things, from respect
to insult. Used mostly for men but can also designate other kind of
animated objects, like kangaroos for example ("I shot the bastard").
Avoid if you have any doubt.
